Good News at the Preserve

August 2025

Thank you to everyone attended and participated in our
2025 Benefit Gala and Hybrid Silent Auction!

From the bottom of our hearts, we want to thank you!

The sold out Huyck Preserve Annual Benefit Gala was a record-breaking success, and it was all because of you! It was wonderful to celebrate the Preserve with our supporters, neighbors, and friends. Thank you to everyone who participated by attending the Gala or joining the fun through the raffle and silent auction. We are grateful to the local businesses who donated items or sponsored the event and to the event's honorary committee. Your generosity has added to our strong foundation and will help lift us up as we finish the year off strong.
If you have photos from the Gala, please share them with us! Send photos to [email protected].

May 2025

Welcome to the Huyck Preserve's 2025 Seasonal Ranger Rachel Colchete!

Rachel is excited to serve as the Preserve's second Seasonal Ranger, after recently completing a Bachelor of Science in Natural Resource Management at SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF). Rachel brings a wealth of knowledge to the job. She has camped, backpacked, and led trail crews working across Vermont, Virginia, Ohio, North Carolina, and Oregon. Her experiences helped her foster a sense of gratitude and respect for the natural world, and she looks forward to helping protect and connect others to the natural wonders of the Preserve. Ranger Rachel will spend the next six months at the Preserve, acting as an important resource for visitors on our trails and in our Visitors' Center, while ensuring protection of the Huyck Preserve’s natural and cultural resources.

This position is supported in part by a Professional Development Grant from the New York State Conservation Partnership Program (NYSCPP) and New York's Environmental Protection Fund. The NYSCPP is administered by the Land Trust Alliance, in coordination with the state Department of Environmental Conservation.

Check out the upcoming Events where you can meet Ranger Rachel!

April 2025

Huyck Preserve’s local high school students and their undergraduate student mentors
present for the first time at Northeast Natural History Conference

For the first time, the Huyck Preserve brought students to the annual Northeast Natural History Conference (NENHC) in April to present their summer 2024 research projects. The NENHC is the largest regional gathering of researchers, natural resource managers, graduate and undergraduate students, and naturalists working in the areas of applied field biology and natural history in the northeastern United States and adjacent areas of Canada. Five high school students from the Preserve’s Wildlife Ecology Research program and two undergraduate students from the Preserve’s Odum Internship in Field Ecology shared their work at the conference’s April 5th poster sessions. The student posters included research projects done at the Huyck Preserve on earthworms, beavers, and ferns. To learn more about the experience and the students’ impressive accomplishments, read more here.
