Founded in 1931, the Huyck Preserve and Biological Research Station has been connecting people to nature for over 80 years! We have a long, rich history as part of Rensselaerville and as one of the oldest biological research stations in the United States. To read more, visit our history page.
Our mission is to preserve the natural beauty of the Rensselaerville Falls, the watershed of Lake Myosotis and surrounding lands, to conduct long-term research on natural systems as part of a global effort to understand and protect the Earth’s biodiversity, and to increase appreciation of this effort through innovative, field-based educational programs for students, teachers, and the community.
The Huyck Preserve and Biological Research Station is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, funded through grants and the support of our members and the public. We are not associated with any state or federal agencies, or any other non-profit nature organizations.
In 2018 the Huyck Preserve earned accreditation from the Land Trust Alliance. Accreditation affirms our commitment to the Preserve's mission and recognizes that the Huyck Preserve has demonstrated sound finances, ethical conduct, responsible governance, and lasting stewardship.
The Huyck Preserve offers 12 miles of trails for hiking (skiing and snowshoeing seasonally). The trails are open dawn to dusk year-round for public use, giving hikers access to over 2000 acres of forest, field, and wetlands, including the Rensselaerville Falls, which cascade over 120 feet. Lake Myosotis is open to the public for kayaking and canoeing as well as fishing (year round).
Education programs include summer programs and school field trips for children, and seasonal public guided hikes and lectures for all ages. All of our educational programming is influenced by our over 80 year history in biological research. You can book programs for your class or organization - we teach all ages!
The Huyck Preserve Visitors' Center is located at the back entrance to the Mill House in the hamlet of Rensselaerville, NY. The Visitor's Center offers seasonal slideshow, hands on table, specimen displays, and more. Stop by to pick up maps and information on upcoming programs.
The Preserve protects over 2,000 acres, including Lake Myosotis, Lincoln Pond, and Hennicke Marsh, and offers a variety of programs from summer education to school groups. Please consider supporting us and becoming a member today - or make a donation! We need your help to continue to protect our open spaces and provide a place where people - especially children - can connect to nature
