Stewardship and Land Management
This Stewardship and management plan for the Huyck Preserve is based on a set of goals found in the Preserve’s mission, vision and guidance within it Strategic Plan. The Preserve’s mission is to preserve the natural beauty of the Rensselaerville Falls, the watershed of Lake Myosotis and surrounding lands, to conduct long-term research on natural systems… and to appreciate this effort through innovative, field-based educational programs for students, teachers and the community. The Preserve strives to be a nationally recognized organization committed to long-term protection of the Earth’s regional and global biodiversity. The Strategic Plan directs the Preserve’s Board of Directors to prepare this Stewardship Plan through the Preserve’s Land Conservation – Stewardship committee and the Scientific Advisory Committee.

Invasive Species
The Preserve is committed to strategic management and monitoring of invasive species to protect native species, important ecological communities, and treasured places at the Preserve. In 2019 the Huyck Preserve drafted its first Invasive Species Management and Monitoring Plan with funding from the New York State Conservation Partnership Program (NYSCPP) and New York's Environmental Protection Fund. The NYSCPP is administered by the Land Trust Alliance, in coordination with the state Department of Environmental Conservation.
Since 2019, annual work on invasive species management and monitoring has been contracted by the Capital Region Partnership for Regional Invasive Species Management (PRISM) using funds from the EPF as administered by the NYS DEC. In 2023, we are grateful to be entering our fifth contract with Cap Region PRISM to continue this critical work.
