Our normal Ecological Explorations program for middle school students and Wildlife Ecology Research program for high school students will not run in 2021, but we are excited to announce some alternatives that will keep students learning and exploring with us this summer.
We look forward to the return of our regular programs in 2022. Stewardship Internship for High School Students High school students (rising 9th-12th graders) have a chance to make a real difference to the health of the Huyck Preserve’s natural communities in this five-day internship. Invasive species pose a serious threat to the native species of the Preserve, and the Huyck Preserve is in its third year of managing invasive species to protect its ecological communities. Students will join Stewardship Coordinator Garrett Chisholm and his summer stewardship crew to tackle some of our most pressing invasive species removal work. Dates: July 19-23 Time: 8am-12pm No charge; community service hours available Meet at and pick-up from the Eldridge Research Center, 284 Pond Hill Road Severe storms will cancel the program for the day. Fully vaccinated students (two-weeks after last vaccine of the series) will not be required to wear a mask. Vaccine cards may be shown to the program leader on the first day. Unvaccinated students must wear a mask when social distancing is not possible. Completion of a daily health screening from home before coming to the program is required. Capped at 5 students; no minimum to run Forest Ecology Research Experience for High School Students
We invite high school students (rising 9th-12th graders) to join Jon Titus, Ph.D., plant ecologist and visiting researcher from SUNY Fredonia, for a week-long immersion into the world of forest ecology research. During this half-day program, students will learn about the history of the Continuous Forest Inventory (CFI) program at the Huyck Preserve and the importance of collecting long-term data on forest composition. With Dr. Titus, students will visit our CFI plots and see how the forests have changed since the last inventory -- are the trees healthy and growing, or are they unhealthy, damaged, or dead? This is a rare chance for students to participate in an active Huyck Preserve research project and learn first-hand how scientists monitor forest change. As we walk through the woods, Dr. Titus will also lead students in a selection of activities to enhance their nature observation skills. Dates: August 2-6 Time: 12-4 pm Cost: $175 members; $250 nonmembers (for the member rate email [email protected]) Weather permitting, we’ll end the week with a swim at Lake Myosotis on Friday. Meet at and pick-up from the Eldridge Research Center, 284 Pond Hill Road unless otherwise notified Severe storms will cancel class. Capped at 5 students; must have three students to run Streamside Science for Middle School Students
Middle school students (rising 6th-8th graders) are invited to come and explore Ten-Mile Creek with us. Students will learn about the factors impacting stream health, consider the effects of invasive species on native stream inhabitants, look for amazing creatures who call the stream home, and enjoy cooling off in this favorite activity of summer.
