Christmas Bird Count Results

1/7/2016

Thanks to the help of 17 awesome Citizen Scientists, we had a successful Christmas Bird Count back on December 19th. Interested in the results? Click below to read a summary!
Despite a very cold and windy day, we had a lot of birds in our count area. Here are the numbers below:

Citizen Scientists = 17
Total birds counted = 1250
Number of species seen = 46

Most numerous (over 100 per species) species seen:
  • American Crow
  • Black Capped Chickadee
  • Blue Jay
  • Canada Goose
  • Dark eyed junco
  • Rock pigeon
  • European starling
  • Wild Turkey

With waters still unfrozen, there were a handful of waterbirds seen including common mergansers, hooded mergansers, and blue winged teal. There was even a Belted kingfisher still hanging out at Lake Myosotis.

This data goes to the Audubon Christmas bird count, and is part of their ongoing efforts to study bird populations! You can read more over at www.christmasbirdcount.org
